O FGTS application is the acronym for Severance Indemnity Fund, which aims to take care of the worker who is fired without just cause, who has an account linked to the employment contract. At the beginning of each month, employers make deposits of 8% of salary into accounts opened at Caixa for their employees.
Therefore, the FGTS is formed by the total amount of amounts that are deposited every month so that, in certain cases, employees can dispose of the total amount deposited.
It was created to help low-income workers to have some money available at special times and in difficult situations, such as unfair dismissal and certain serious illnesses. The FGTS can be used in the acquisition, construction, liquidation or payment of debt linked to the acquisition of a house.
But, in addition, it also operates in sanitation and infrastructure works, to improve the quality of life, with drinking water, sewage collection and treatment.
How was it created?
The FGTS was created by Law nº 5.107, of September 13, 1966 and effective from January 1, 1967, to take care of the worker dismissed without just cause. It has a linked and open account for each worker, starting from the first deposit made.
How can I consult my FGTS by cell phone?

First, go to the Google Play or App Store to download the FGTS application. When the application is opened for the first time, place your finger on the “For the worker” option;

Third, enter the NIS number and click “Continue”. Then, fill in the requested data and, once everything is ready, scroll down and press “Next”;
Fourth, define the password that will be used to access and check your FGTS balance. Once registration has been completed, the process to find out what your FGTS balance is on your cell phone is very simple.
Fifth, open the FGTS application normally again and choose the “For the worker” option. Use your NIS number and the password that was defined. And, if necessary, confirm your address.
Now, the balance can be viewed right on the app's home screen or, if you want, use the "Extract" option, which appears in the area where your main menu is. With everything finished, you will be able to query your FGTS balance using your smartphone.
